About this tour
Around 1900 Prague was a booming city of the Habsburg empire, and it built with confidence. The Municipal House, the finest Art Nouveau building in the city, was decorated by the best Czech artists of the day, among them Alfons Mucha. A few years later, a group of young architects went further and built in a style found nowhere else: Czech Cubism.
Two styles, one walk
The tour starts inside the Municipal House, on its own guided visit, with the Smetana Hall and the Mayor's Hall painted by Mucha. Round the corner, Josef Gočár's House of the Black Madonna shows Cubism in architecture, and its Grand Café Orient is a Cubist interior where you can still order a coffee. The Mucha Museum explains the artist behind the posters that defined Art Nouveau, and the Lucerna passage, built by Václav Havel's grandfather, adds a twentieth-century twist with David Černý's upside-down horse.
Your licensed guide shows the details most people walk past: the façades, the ironwork, the stained glass and a street lamp that is a work of Cubist art.

The route is short and level, and much of it is indoors, which makes it a good choice for a rainy day or for travellers who prefer not to walk far.

What is Czech Cubism?
A short-lived style from about 1911 to 1914, when Czech architects applied Cubist forms to buildings, furniture and even a street lamp. No other city has Cubist architecture on the scale of Prague.
Are the Municipal House and the museums included?
They are on the route, and the tickets are listed separately in your quote. We book the Municipal House tour time in advance.
Is this tour good in winter?
Yes. Much of it is indoors, and the Grand Café Orient is a warm place for a break.
